1. What do the keys on the infrared keyboard do?

See the tips below for details on the cmd, alt, and edit keys. As for the other special keys, here's what they do:

2. Is there a Stop button to keep a Web page from loading?

There isn't a Stop button, but if you press the Back key, that usually cuts the connection and brings you back to your current page.

3. What if I don't have the infrared keyboard? Can I use a standard PC keyboard? Are the commands different?

You can use a wired, PC keyboard with the WebTV Classic terminal, but not with the WebTV Plus receiver. The Classic has a keyboard port in the back, allowing you to plug in a wired keyboard. You need to use a PS/2, type-A, 6-pin keyboard. These should be readily available at computer stores.

Then all you need to do is plug the cable into the keyboard port. It's the small, round socket near the phone jack. Once it's plugged in, you can use it just as you would the infrared keyboard. The only difference is the F keys, which are used for special WebTV commands:

F1: Power
F2: Favorites
F3: Search
F4: Mail
F5: Find
F6: Info
F7: Go to
F8: Save
F9: Send
F10: Recent
F11: Options

For details on what each of these features do, look above at Tip #1.

4. What does the cmd button do?

The cmd (command) button is used with other buttons on the keyboard for shortcuts. Pressing cmd and another key at the same time will perform the following functions:

cmd + left arrow
moves the cursor to the beginning of a line of text you're editing

cmd + right arrow
moves the cursor to the end of a line of text

cmd + delete
deletes an entire line of text

cmd + f
brings up the Find window; enter a word or phrase and the system will look for it on the page that you're currently viewing

cmd + g
finds the next occurrence of your search (after initially using Find)

cmd + r
reloads the page that you're currently viewing

cmd + p
brings up the print window

cmd + ctrl
displays the Web address of the link that the cursor is currently on

5. What does the alt button do?

The alt button on the keyboard is used to create special text characters. This is done by holding the alt key while you press another key on the keyboard. Here is a list of what each key does when pressed along with alt:

A = å
B = ™
C = ç
D = ð
E = é
F = ƒ
G = ©
H = ª
I = î
J = °
K = †
L = ¬
M = µ
N = ñ
O = ø
P = ¶
Q = æ
R = ®
S = ß
T = Þ
U = ü
V = ‚
W = œ
X = ×
Y = ¥
Z = §
1 = ¹
2 = ²
3 = ³
4 = ¢
5 = ¼
6 = ½
7 = ¾
8 = ·
9 = º
; = ...
/ = ÷

6. What does the edit button do?

The infamous edit button performs one specific task. It is used when filling out forms or on any screen where you are entering text into different fields. After you have finished entering text into all the entries of a form, the arrow keys on the keyboard will move the yellow selection box around the screen, from field to field, but they will not move the cursor around within each field. This is where the edit key comes in. Go to a text-entry field, press edit, and the text cursor will activate within the box, letting you use the arrow keys to move around within the previously-entered text.

7. What is that little red dot that sometimes appears in the title bar on the bottom of the screen?

Whenever you press the caps lock button, that red dot will appear. This is just a reminder that the button has been activated. Leaving the caps lock button on after you've stopped using the keyboard could drain the batteries.
