Review: WebTV Networks

Hello Club WebTV members!

This edition of Club WebTV is proudly brought to you by many new writers and contributors. Three new Customer Caretakers have pitched in and made this issue as informative and fun as the previous issues. We've got a great issue this month.

We're sure you'll enjoy our upcoming features as much as you have been enjoying some of our latest features, like newsgroups. Newsgroups give people the opportunity to share ideas and thoughts - and their e-mail address. With so many new people with the webtv.net domain out showing off their opinions and input, spammers have found a whole new audience. While most people don't enjoy junk e-mail any more than regular junk mail, mass mailings are rewarding enough to encourage people to continue. In fact, some of these spammers are Club WebTV members themselves.

Inappropriate use of e-mail is no joking matter. The WebTV Networks Terms of Service, which all Club WebTV members agreed to when registering with the WebTV Network, states the following:
Excerpts from WebTV Networks Terms of Service:

Inappropriate or Unauthorized Usage.

You agree not to use the WebTV Network in any manner that does or would have a tendency to disrupt the normal use of the WebTV Network by other subscribers. In the event of any inappropriate or unauthorized usage, you may receive an e-mail warning or have your account temporarily suspended or, at WebTV Networks' sole discretion, terminated. Be advised that certain unauthorized usage may subject you to civil and/or criminal liability. Without limit to the foregoing, you agree not to use the WebTV Network or its services to (i) make unauthorized attempts to access, use or change the systems, networks or accounts of others; or (ii) to send unsolicited messages, advertising or promotional Materials to third parties; or (iii) to use your access to the WebTV Network to provide a minor access to inappropriate Materials without the consent of the minor's parent or guardian.

Network Conduct and Proper Language.

Conduct on the WebTV Network should conform with public standards of decency and decorum and right of quiet enjoyment. No user may disrupt, harass, defame or otherwise embarrass, cause discomfort to or become offensive to another person on the WebTV Network or on the Internet. Vulgarity and profanity within e-mail, chat groups or within user names is not permitted. There shall be no advertising to or solicitation of other users. WebTV Networks reserves the right to prohibit the use of any user name and/or to make changes to any user name as WebTV Networks, in its sole discretion, requires.

In a voluntary effort to discourage mass mailings, WebTV Networks has cut down on the number of newsgroups you can cross-post to. To cut down on spam to your own e-mail account, try the following. Open an e-mail account which is always and only used to post to newsgroups. Write back to the culprit and ask to be removed from his mailing list. And when all else fails, use Discard!

Hopefully, these measures will help you all avoid some of the bumps on the Information Superhighway. As you plot your route, we hope that Club WebTV is an informative road map and useful maintenance guide for your Internet vehicle!

Enjoy!
